Why I'm Running the Maidenhead Half Marathon – Michele Valimaa

On 26 October, I’ll be running the Maidenhead Half Marathon in support of the Alzheimer’s Society, a cause very close to my heart.

For over 21 years, I’ve worked alongside older people, many of whom live with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The last 14 years have been spent with the Abbeyfield Maidenhead Society, where I’ve had the privilege of supporting residents and families through some of the most challenging and meaningful moments of their lives.

Alzheimer’s doesn’t just affect memory — it touches every part of a person’s identity and deeply impacts their loved ones. I’ve seen the courage it takes to live with dementia, and the strength families show in caring for those they love. This run is my tribute to them — to the resilience, love, and humanity that shine through even in the hardest times.
