This year we're hitchhiking from Sheffield to Bratislava!! 👍🚗I am taking part in Big Bummit, the biggest charity hitchhike in the UK. On the 7th to the 14th April, myself and 150 others will have 8 days to get from Sheffield all the way to Bratislava . To do this we will be relying completely on the kindness of strangers for lifts! 🥰We will do this to support five charities &lt;3The Snowdrop project is a Sheffield based charity, providing long term support for survivors of human trafficking and modern slavery. Many survivors of trafficking face significant barriers to rebuilding their lives, including housing insecurity, trauma and lack of employment opportunities. The charity also advocates for policy changes and improved legal protections for trafficking survivors in the UK. Their holistic community based approach ensures survivors receive continuous care and do fall through the cracks of the system.City of Sanctuary Sheffield is a local charity dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for asylum seekers and refugees. The organization operates The Sanctuary, a hub in the city center where people seeking refuge can access vital services. As Sheffield is a City of Sanctuary, this charity plays a crucial role in fostering a culture of hospitality and inclusion. Volunteers help with everything from administrative support to befriending newcomers, making it a great opportunity for students to get involved. The charity actively campaigns for refugee rights and works with local institutions, including universities, to build understanding and solidarity. Supporting City of Sanctuary Sheffield helps provide essential resources to some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.Haven is a Sheffield-based charity dedicated to supporting children and young people affected by domestic abuse. The organisation provides free, voluntary, and specialized services to help young individuals process trauma, rebuild confidence, and develop healthy coping strategies. Their CandYP (Children and Young People) program focuses on restoring relationships between children and parents post-abuse, ensuring a nurturing environment for healing. Haven also delivers training and workshops to educate professionals and communities on supporting children who have experienced domestic violence. By raising awareness and providing direct emotional and practical support, Haven plays a crucial role in breaking the cycle of abuse.Sheffield S6 Foodbank provides emergency food parcels and essential supplies to individuals and families facing financial hardship. Run by The Food and Community Trust, it operates through a voucher referral system, ensuring those in crisis receive nutritionally balanced food packages. The foodbank also offers financial and housing advice, helping people address the root causes of poverty.Iniciatíva Inakosť (Initiative Otherness) is a leading LGBTQ+ charity in Slovakia, advocating for equality, legal protections, and social acceptance. Based in Bratislava, the organization works to influence legislation, raise awareness, and support LGBTQ+ individuals facing discrimination. Iniciatíva Inakosť also organises Bratislava Pride, Slovakia’s largest LGBTQ+ event, promoting visibility and inclusion. Additionally, they collaborate with local and international partners to combat homophobia and push for progressive policies

Hi there!This November, two friends and I are hitchhiking to Edinburgh as part of the Bummit Society. This is all in aid of charities helping people in Sheffield and Edinburgh. Any donations would be greatly appreciated and would help to make the world a better place &lt;3The charities we will be supporting are: ASSIST Support individuals who have been unsuccessful in their asylum applications. Many of the individuals ASSIST helps have escaped the unimaginable horrors of war, violence and persecution How they help: they offer emergency accommodation, welfare benefits, assistance in community integration e.g. learning English, local activism. https://www.assistsheffield.org.uk ROUNDABOUT South Yorkshire homeless youth charity. Aims to help bring stability into homeless youth’s lives. They do this by: homeless prevention services e.g. mediation with youth and their families, accommodation in hostels, help with transition to independent living, tenancy support, 350 bed spaces that they offer and they have been full every night of 2024 so far. Whether they are homeless or at risk of homelessness they support with finding people safe, reliable homes but ensure that the cause of homelessness is tackled at the root.
