In December 2023 our crew of three women, The Tidewaves, will row an unsupported 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. Louise Cox, Jordan Cole-Hossain and Robyn Hart-Winks are taking on this challenge in aid of three fantastic charities that support children’s access to sport: Access Sport, London Youth Rowing and SportsAid Scotland.This will be the hardest challenge of our lives.In what has become known as the World’s Toughest Row, we will cross from La Gomera to Antigua, a gruelling journey in which we will row shifts of 2 hours on the oars, 1 hour off, for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for as long as it takes us to reach the finish line! Whilst rowing in excess of 1.5 million strokes and burning over 6,000 calories a day. We will face sleep deprivation, busy shipping lanes, salt sores, and sea sickness inflicted by the conditions. Battling through shark-infested waters, sea storms and up to 40 ft. waves, The Tidewaves have come together to row the Atlantic Ocean to test themselves and to experience life in its extremes.Alongside our own personal challenge, The Tidewaves are competing in the World’s Toughest Row to raise awareness and funds for our incredible charities, campaigning for the recognition of the importance sport can play in a life. Having benefitted from sport throughout our own lives, we passionately believe in the power that sport can have, the life skills that can be gained from being involved in sport and the opportunities this can provide. We think that all children should have access to these opportunities.Access Sport is a national charity formed in 2004. Their vision is that no one should be excluded from the transformational benefits of community sport, which, for them, focus on physical and mental health and well-being; personal development including life skills and prospects; sense of belonging and community engagement.Their mission is to make inclusion the norm in community sport by tackling the access barriers faced by disadvantaged and disabled children and young people, focussing on the causes of exclusion, not just the symptoms.London Youth Rowing (LYR) is a groundbreaking sports initiative - developing young people through physical activity and opening access to rowing at all levels.LYR is an inclusive programme for young people of all abilities, social, ethnic and economic backgrounds. LYR operates across London delivering innovative programmes, training and evaluation for schools, youth clubs and community groups.SportsAid Scotland is a charity that provides financial assistance in the form of grant awards to talented sporting youngsters in the 12 to 22 year age range, and to disability athletes of any age who are already competing at national level in their age group and have the potential to represent Scotland at senior level. The finance given is to help the athletes with their travel and training costs, and will hopefully assist them in becoming Scotland&#x27;s future sporting stars.100% of funds raised through our GiveStar page will go directly to our charities, split equally three ways.Wanting to know what it meant to embark on The World’s Toughest Row and to go through the hardest challenge yet was a huge motivator for the Tidewaves. More people have summited Mount Everest or been to space than have rowed across an ocean, and we are aiming to be the fastest female trio to do so, inspiring young people and future athletes along the way.
