WHYAs many of you reading this will know, I’ve dabbled in running since I was young and have done a few half marathons, and a marathon back in 2017. I generally enjoy being out running, so have never done any of these races for charity.More recently, both mine and Hannah’s families have been affected by dementia.And we aren’t a minority. There are up to a million people in the UK suffering with dementia and it was leading cause of deaths in 2022.Not only does the disease have such a devastating impact on the person suffering, but it also puts great strain and challenges on their family and friends.Research is pivotal to ensuring that in the longer term we find a cure, or even a way to prevent dementia ever starting. However, it’s vital not to overlook the importance of the charities who help the people suffering with the disease now and provide their loved ones with support and advice.That’s why I’m running an ultra marathon to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK and Age UK.Alzheimer’s Research UK uses donations to fund research across all types of dementia - focusing on improvements to diagnosis, treatment and a cure.Age UK provide a huge breadth of services across the country. They don’t work exclusively with people who have dementia, but provide support for a variety of issues that are common in the elderly such as mobility problems and loneliness. We have seen first hand the benefit of their services for dementia sufferers such as social groups, home visits or their advice helplines.So to give something back to these amazing charities, I thought I’d give myself a challenge.WHATThe race - ‘St Albans Stampede 12 hour enduro’. A twelve-hour ultramarathon where you complete as many laps of the 4 mile route as possible.WHEN7th September starting at 9am and finishing at 9pm.HOW (MUCH)Any donations would be greatly appreciated - it’s a great cause!I’m aiming for £2000 to be split between the two charities 50/50.The distance covered in the race is purely down to me and how far I can get in 12-hours. For that extra bit of motivation, if you want to link a donation to distance covered (£1 per mile or £2 per lap for example) then please donate a small amount before the race and include your pledge in the comment. I will update this page after the race with distance covered and you can subtract the initial donation from the overall total.Of course traditional “fixed” donations are welcomed too!I’ll be posting updates to the page as I get through the final 6 weeks of training, and will try to keep my social media updated throughout that time and during the event to provide real-time progress.
