Craig's Big Charity Hitchhike to Ljubljana, Slovenia

Hello and welcome to my donation page for the Big "Bummit" charity hitchhike to Ljubljana, Slovenia.

In the Easter holidays my flatmate Charlie and I (as seen in the photo above) will be hitchhiking, over a week, from Sheffield all the way to Ljubljana, Slovenia.

This is in collaboration with the Bummit Charity Hitchhike Society at the University of Sheffield. (https://bummit.union.shef.ac.uk/)

Along with many other charity hitchhikers, Charlie and I will fundraise a minimum of £250 of donations each to an organisation which has managed to raise (over the past 20 years of hitchhiking) more than £1.7 million for some amazing causes.

The 5 causes for this years event are:

1 - The Sick Children's Trust - (https://www.sickchildrenstrust.org/homes-from-home/magnolia-house/)

Supporting families with sick children being treated in the Sheffield Children's Hospital by giving them a place to stay close to the hospital

2 - Assist Sheffield - (https://www.assistsheffield.org.uk/)

Supporting people who have been refused asylum with accommodation and information in Sheffield

3 - The Broomhall Homework Club - (https://localgiving.org/charity/the-broomhall-centre/)

Provides a place for young people in the disadvantaged area of Broomhall, Sheffield to study and further support their futures

4 - Roundabout Youth Housing Charity - (https://www.roundabouthomeless.org/what-we-do/about-us/)

Provides shelter and support to young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the Sheffield and South Yorkshire area

5 - Legebitra - (https://legebitra.si/en/who-we-are/)

Supporting LGBTQ+ community with counselling, support groups and education, while working to increase safety for community members across Slovenia with localised campaigns and law changes.

All donations will be shared equally between the 5 charities.

(For further information see below)

As an Engineering student at the University of Sheffield, I want to support my local community, whilst also exposing myself to new experiences and challenges.

If you would like to be part of my adventure (April 1st - 8th) closer to departure I will share a link to a website where you can track our live location and progress (look out for the team labelled Charlie and Craig.)

Coincidentally, my 20th birthday falls in the middle of our adventure and will be a memorable birthday to say the least.

Donating to this campaign will enable me to create lasting memories and sample new experiences whilst also supporting worthwhile causes.

Thank you so much for all your help and support,

Craig

Further Information:

1 - The Sick Children's Trust - (https://www.sickchildrenstrust.org/homes-from-home/magnolia-house/)

10 Years ago Bummit helped fund the opening of Magnolia House, which supports families of sick children being treated at Sheffield Children’s Hospital by giving them somewhere to stay just minutes from their seriously ill child’s hospital bedside. This house now needs renovations and The Sick Children’s Trust reached directly out to our amazing Bummit community for support. Our ‘Homes from Home’ are more than just a place to stay. Our house staff and the warm communal areas make sure that there’s a friendly ear to listen when families need it.

2 - Assist Sheffield - (https://www.assistsheffield.org.uk/)

ASSIST Sheffield works with people seeking sanctuary and who have been refused asylum. Providing accommodation, information and other support, ASSIST is a community focussed charity relying solely on volunteers, grants, and local donations.

The priority is to meet immediate and basic human needs. We make referrals to our emergency accommodation, issue emergency payments and food vouchers, and direct clients to food banks, clothing banks and sources of medical help. We provide information on places where people who are seeking asylum can spend their time, meet other people, learn English and more. We work with them so they can become part of the Sheffield community, overcome isolation, and improve their situation and well-being.

3 - The Broomhall Homework Club - (https://localgiving.org/charity/the-broomhall-centre/)

Broomhall is a Sheffield district near the Uni with high levels of deprivation, this will likely climb with increase in cost of living. The Broomhall Homework Club provides a space for young people to study, access computers, support with their studies and university/job applications for their futures.

Many previous members of the club have learnt to read and write, find academic passions, found their dream career and successfully got into university. Many of the volunteers at the club are students from the University of Sheffield and previously the group received grant funding from the uni. Over the last few year the club has been at risk of closing down, our Big Bummit fundraising could keep it running and provide the funds needed to last over a year!!

4 - Roundabout Youth Housing Charity - (https://www.roundabouthomeless.org/what-we-do/about-us/)

Roundabout is South Yorkshire’s local youth housing charity providing shelter, support and life skills to young people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Roundabout now supports over 300 young people aged 16-25 every day. Providing emergency accommodation in a Sheffield hostel, supporting young people in residential projects in Sheffield and Rotherham and providing key services delivering comprehensive programmes of training, involvement and empowerment which help to prepare young people for independent living.

5 - Legebitra - (https://legebitra.si/en/who-we-are/)

Located in Ljubljana, Legebitra is a non-partisan LGBT civil society organization, active in the fields of human rights, education, mental, physical and sexual health. Advocating for social and systemic changes based on respect for sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression.

It takes into account the intersection of other personal circumstances, such as health, nationality, race or ethnic origin, language, religion or belief, handicap, age, social status, wealth, education or any other personal circumstance. Supporting LGBTQ+ community with counselling, support groups, and education while working to increase safety for community members across Slovenia with localised campaigns and law changes.
